We are bombarded with such spectacular photography these days, it’s hard to imagine a time when these things were not commonplace. Take this image of a snowflake. Beautiful, but nothing we haven’t seen before, right?
But this photograph is from 1885! According to this article, the photographer, Wilson Bentley, spent years trying to figure out how to preserve the beauty of snowflakes. After this success in 1885, he went on to take over 5000 snowflake photos, many of which are published in a book called Snow Crystals. Worth checking out, if for no other reason than it boasts 2453 illustrations on the front cover. Now that’s my kind of book!
